Bengaluru: Karnataka is set to witness a leadership transition with senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar expected to be sworn in as the state’s next chief minister on June 3. The development comes after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s resignation was reportedly accepted by the Governor, paving the way for the selection of a new leader.
Sources in the Congress indicated that Shivakumar’s elevation is expected to be formally endorsed at the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting scheduled later on Saturday. Party leaders said the consensus around his candidature emerged ahead of the meeting, making his appointment largely a formality.
In a departure from the grand public swearing-in ceremonies often associated with political transitions, Shivakumar is understood to have opted for a simple oath-taking event. The ceremony is likely to be held at the Glass House in Lok Bhavan, Bengaluru, with limited attendance.
Party sources said plans to mobilise large numbers of supporters from across the state have been shelved. Instead, Shivakumar is expected to undertake district-wise visits after assuming office to thank party workers and the public for their support.
The move is being viewed as an attempt to project administrative prudence and avoid inconvenience to citizens. An official announcement regarding the swearing-in schedule is expected following the completion of the CLP process and gubernatorial formalities.
The leadership change marks a significant moment in Karnataka politics, with the Congress preparing for a new phase under Shivakumar’s stewardship.
