DRI Busts Gold Smuggling Syndicates in East, Northeast; Seizes Gold Worth ₹25 Crore

New Delhi: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted organised gold smuggling networks operating in eastern and northeastern India, seizing around 17 kg of foreign-origin gold worth nearly ₹25 crore and arresting 10 people.

The coordinated operations were carried out in Kolkata and Agartala on June 12, 2026, officials said.

In Kolkata, the DRI intercepted a smuggling syndicate allegedly attempting to bring 11.6 kg of gold from Thailand through Kolkata airport. Seven persons, including a woman, were arrested in connection with the case. The seized gold is estimated to be worth around ₹17 crore.

In a separate operation in Agartala, the agency seized approximately 5.1 kg of foreign-origin gold, valued at around ₹8 crore, allegedly smuggled through the Tripura sector of the India-Bangladesh border.

Three persons were arrested in the Agartala operation, which was conducted in coordination with the Railway Protection Force.

The DRI said the operations were part of its continued crackdown on organised gold smuggling networks and efforts to curb illegal movement of foreign-origin precious metals into the country.
