Bhopal: Union housing and urban affairs minister Manohar Lal on Saturday sanctioned more than 42,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0 in Madhya Pradesh, while nearly 38,000 families performed grih pravesh ceremonies in their newly built homes.
The programme, held at Sanwer in Indore district, was attended by chief minister Mohan Yadav, state urban development and housing minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, minister of state for urban administration and development Pratima Bagri, and other state ministers.
Under PMAY-U 2.0, sanction letters were distributed to over 42,000 eligible beneficiaries, involving a government subsidy of ₹1,050 crore. The event benefited more than 80,000 families through fresh housing approvals and housewarming ceremonies.
Addressing the gathering, Manohar Lal congratulated the beneficiaries and said that every new home symbolises dignity, security and hope for families. He reiterated the Centre’s commitment to achieving the vision of ‘Housing for All’ under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Madhya Pradesh has emerged as one of the top-performing states in implementing the PMAY-U scheme. According to official data, more than 10.39 lakh houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, of which over 9.08 lakh have already been completed.
Officials said the initiative marks another significant step towards providing permanent housing assets to urban families, while also improving access to basic amenities and livelihood opportunities. The scheme also promotes women’s empowerment by mandating ownership in the name of a woman member of the household or through joint ownership.
The Centre said PMAY-U has played a key role in improving the living standards of urban poor and other eligible beneficiaries. Through PMAY-U 2.0, the government aims to support an additional one crore economically weaker section (EWS), low-income group (LIG) and middle-income group (MIG) families with financial assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh for constructing, purchasing or renting pucca houses in urban areas
