Mumbai: Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji became emotional and broke down in tears while receiving an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Australia’s La Trobe University.
Rani was honoured at a special ceremony at Federation Square in Melbourne as part of the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). As her three-decade career and contributions to Indian cinema were highlighted, the actor appeared overwhelmed and was seen wiping away tears before accepting the honour.
La Trobe University recognised Rani for her contribution to Indian cinema, as well as her humanitarian work and advocacy on issues concerning women, children and marginalised communities.
“Receiving this honorary doctorate from La Trobe University is one of the most humbling moments of my life,” Rani said. She added that she accepted the honour as an Indian proud to see her culture and cinema celebrated in Australia.
Rani becomes the second Indian film personality after Shah Rukh Khan to receive an Honorary Doctor of Letters from La Trobe University.
