Tokyo: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday chaired an India-Japan industry roundtable on semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting the growing scope for cooperation in strategic technology sectors.
Goyal said India’s semiconductor demand is projected to reach $150 billion by 2032 and outlined the government’s strategy covering chip design, fabrication, packaging, research and talent development.
He highlighted $10 billion under Semicon India 1.0 and an additional $15 billion under Semicon India 2.0 to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem.

Representatives of around 21 leading Japanese companies, including Tokyo Electron, Fujifilm, Kyocera, NEC and ROHM, participated in the roundtable. Japanese firms expressed confidence in India’s semiconductor and AI potential and reaffirmed their commitment to Make in India, Design in India and Develop in India.
Earlier, Goyal held bilateral talks with Japan’s Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Akazawa Ryosei.
The two ministers reviewed bilateral trade and investment and agreed to accelerate the review of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to make it more responsive to emerging opportunities.
They also discussed cooperation in manufacturing, technology, innovation and next-generation industries, while noting progress towards Japan’s JPY 10 trillion private investment target in India.
