As protests rock Europe, Goyal praises Indian community for discipline and family values

BERLIN: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has described Indians as a peace-loving community that does not take to the streets to disrupt society, drawing a contrast with protests unfolding across several parts of Europe.

Speaking at an interaction with members of the Indian diaspora in Berlin, Goyal said the community’s conduct, family values and responsible lifestyle had helped Indians earn respect and a warm welcome abroad.

“People know that you do not indulge in acts of vandalism,” Goyal said, adding that Indians were not known for disrupting society in the manner witnessed in parts of Europe. He also acknowledged that there could be exceptions beyond anyone’s control.

His remarks come amid protests in France and Italy, and against the backdrop of demonstrations in India targeting the Election Commission.

In France, students and young people have continued to protest over rising living costs, wages and public services. According to reports, around 70,000 police personnel were deployed and 1,314 people were arrested. Nearly 50 police officers were injured during clashes. France’s interior ministry said approximately 410,000 people participated in rallies against the government.

Italy also witnessed demonstrations on October 24 over the war and the rising cost of living. Clashes between police and protesters were reported in Turin, Rome and Bologna, while demonstrations in Milan remained peaceful.

Goyal also urged Indians living abroad to contribute to the development of children in India by providing mentorship, digital training and career guidance, highlighting the potential of the diaspora to expand opportunities for young people.

The minister visited Germany from October 22 to 24 to strengthen bilateral trade, investment and industrial cooperation. His comments on the Indian community come at a time when public protests and political demonstrations are drawing attention in several countries.
