Cervical cancer awareness drive draws attention in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: As programmes marking International Women’s Day are held across the country, initiatives focusing on women’s health are gaining traction, with a series of awareness campaigns led by noted gynaecologist Dr. Padmini Prasad drawing attention.

Dr. Prasad, who has been conducting outreach programmes for several years, has recently focused on cervical cancer awareness, with sessions in educational institutions receiving encouraging response. Organisers said such initiatives are helping spread crucial health awareness among young women.

A recent ‘Health Awareness Programme’ was held for students at IIIT Bangalore in Electronic City, where Dr. Prasad addressed topics including physical and mental development, sexual health, and protection against harassment.

During the interactive session, students raised questions on lifestyle-related health risks, sexually transmitted infections and responsible behaviour. Emphasising the importance of informed consent and awareness, she said changing lifestyles are contributing to rising health challenges.

Highlighting cervical cancer as a growing concern, Dr. Prasad stressed that the disease is largely preventable and underscored the importance of HPV vaccination. She also spoke about gender sensitivity, identity and the need for greater awareness to ensure overall well-being among women.

Participants said such programmes play a key role in equipping students with knowledge on preventive healthcare and informed decision-making.
