Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader B. K. Hariprasad formally assumed charge as president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) at a massive party convention held at Palace Grounds in Bengaluru on Sunday.
The leadership transition was marked by Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar handing over the party flag to Hariprasad, symbolically transferring organisational responsibilities.
The event was attended by Mallikarjun Kharge, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, along with ministers, MPs, MLAs, party office-bearers and senior leaders from across the state.
Addressing party workers after taking charge, Hariprasad said the Congress party’s guiding principles are rooted in the tricolour and the Constitution. He urged party cadres to unite in the fight for the rights of marginalised and oppressed sections of society and called for resistance against politics based on religious divisions.
The newly appointed KPCC chief stressed that safeguarding the Constitution, democracy and voting rights remains a key responsibility of the Congress party. He also launched a sharp attack on the BJP and the RSS, accusing them of undermining constitutional values.
Hariprasad highlighted the Congress party’s role in India’s freedom struggle and the establishment of democratic institutions, while recalling the contributions of leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.
Calling on young party workers to embrace the party’s ideals and develop a spirit of struggle, he said strengthening the Congress organisation would require collective effort and commitment.
Describing his new role as a responsibility rather than a position of power, Hariprasad said he would work to justify the faith placed in him by the party leadership and workers.
