Chikkaballapura: Five people, including four women, were killed and more than 10 others injured in a devastating chain collision near Sunkalamma Temple in Bagepalli taluk of Chikkaballapura district on Sunday, police said.
The victims, all travelling in an autorickshaw, died on the spot after the vehicle was caught in a multi-vehicle crash involving a Thar SUV and a canter truck.
According to preliminary investigations, the speeding Thar rammed into the autorickshaw moving ahead of it. The impact caused the auto driver to lose control, following which the vehicle crashed into a canter truck travelling in front.
The autorickshaw was mangled beyond recognition in the collision. The deceased were identified as Umadevi (55), Lakshmamma (50), Vijaya (40), Sarojamma and autorickshaw driver Anjinappa (35), all residents of Bagepalli town.
More than 10 people sustained serious injuries in the accident and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their condition is being monitored, officials said.
The accident took place within the jurisdiction of the Bagepalli police station. Senior police officers visited the spot, inspected the scene and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the crash.
