Guarantee schemes will not be stopped, no matter what: D.K. Shivakumar rebuts Opposition claims

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday firmly stated that the Karnataka government will not discontinue any of its flagship guarantee schemes, including Gruhalakshmi Scheme and Gruhalakshmi Scheme, dismissing Opposition allegations as baseless.

Amid ongoing political debate over the fiscal impact of the welfare programmes, Shivakumar clarified that all guarantee schemes will continue “100 per cent” and urged citizens not to be misled by rumours.

The remarks come amid reports suggesting that the Gruhalakshmi scheme has emerged as one of the most financially demanding initiatives among the state’s five guarantee schemes, with over ₹120 crore reportedly spent in the last three years. The government has also initiated a review of beneficiary records following complaints of alleged misuse.

Opposition leaders have claimed that the review exercise is a step towards eventual withdrawal of the schemes. However, Shivakumar strongly rejected the charge, reiterating that there is no proposal to scrap any welfare programme.

He also acknowledged instances of irregularities, including fake documents being used and bank accounts allegedly opened in the names of deceased persons to avail benefits. Officials have been instructed to re-verify beneficiary details such as names, addresses and bank accounts to ensure transparency and eliminate ineligible entries.

Reiterating the government’s stand, Shivakumar said the guarantee schemes remain a “matter of pride” for the Congress government and will continue without interruption.
