Heavy rain forecast in 13 Karnataka districts; IMD issues yellow alert

Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall across Karnataka over the next few days and issued a yellow alert for 13 districts spanning the coastal belt, Malnad region and parts of the northern and southern interior.

According to the IMD, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at isolated places in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Belgaum, Dharwad, Haveri, Koppal, Ballari, Chitradurga and Vijayanagar districts.

The monsoon has intensified along the coast, with heavy spells expected in parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, while light to moderate rain is forecast in Uttara Kannada.

In the Malnad region, heavy rainfall is likely in pockets of Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu, as well as parts of Ballari, Vijayanagar and Chitradurga.

Meanwhile, moderate rain accompanied by cool winds is expected in Bengaluru city and rural, along with Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Davangere, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara and Tumakuru districts.

In the northern interior, the IMD has forecast heavy rain with thundershowers at a few places in Dharwad, Haveri, Belgaum and Koppal, while moderate rainfall is likely in Bagalkot, Bidar, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir.
