Hiriyur By-Election Heats Up; Dugollara Sangh Leader Rajanna Joins BJP

Bengaluru: Political activities in the Hiriyur Assembly constituency have intensified ahead of the by-election announcement following the untimely death of senior leader and minister D. Sudhakar.

Even before the official election notification, political strategies and counter-strategies have begun among the Congress, BJP and JDS parties.

In a significant political development, Dugollara Sangh state president Rajanna joined the BJP, triggering fresh discussions in the constituency’s political circles.

Political observers say the BJP has adopted a special strategy to attract the influential Kadugolla community vote bank in Hiriyur, and Rajanna’s induction is being seen as part of that move.

At the same time, alliance partner JDS is also reportedly eyeing the constituency and has started internal discussions on fielding a candidate from the party as the NDA alliance nominee for the by-election.

While JDS leaders are said to be demanding the seat based on alliance considerations, BJP leaders are also calculating the possibility of contesting with their own candidate. The BJP is focusing strongly on consolidating support from the Kadugolla community, which is considered politically influential in the constituency.

BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra attended Rajanna’s induction programme into the party. Former Union Minister A. Narayanaswamy, former Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol, Legislative Council Opposition Leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and MLC N. Ravikumar were also present along with several BJP leaders.

The upcoming Hiriyur by-election is expected to intensify alliance politics further, with ticket distribution likely to become a major point of political debate in the coming days.
