New Delhi: India and Sri Lanka on Friday reviewed bilateral cooperation in the power sector, with discussions focusing on the proposed India–Sri Lanka HVDC interconnection and the Sampur Solar Power Project.
Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal led the Indian delegation at the meeting in New Delhi, while Sri Lanka’s Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation and Minister of Energy Anura Karunathilake headed the Sri Lankan delegation.
The two sides reviewed the progress of ongoing bilateral initiatives and discussed ways to expand cooperation in cross-border electricity trade, renewable energy, transmission infrastructure and capacity building.
The initiatives are aimed at strengthening energy security and supporting the clean energy transition in the region.
The Indian side also shared its experience in developing transmission systems through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) framework under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Both countries reviewed progress under existing bilateral mechanisms and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the power sector for sustainable development and regional energy security.
Manohar Lal reiterated India’s commitment to the long-standing energy partnership with Sri Lanka. Karunathilake appreciated India’s continued support and expressed Sri Lanka’s commitment to expanding bilateral energy cooperation.
The meeting was attended by Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal and senior Indian officials. Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India Mahishini Colonne and other senior officials were also part of the delegation.
