Chennai: Tamil superstar Vijay’s much-awaited film ‘Jana Nayagan’ grossed an estimated Rs 78.27 crore worldwide on its opening day, falling short of industry expectations that it would cross the Rs 100-crore mark on Day 1.
According to trade estimates, the film was screened on 13,067 screens across the country on Thursday and recorded an overall theatre occupancy of 41.6%. It earned an estimated Rs 41 crore net in India, including around Rs 36.5 crore from the Tamil version alone. The domestic gross collection stood at Rs 48.27 crore.
The film also collected an estimated Rs 30 crore from overseas markets, taking its worldwide opening-day gross to Rs 78.27 crore.
Industry observers said the film’s opening-day performance may have been affected by the alleged online circulation of pirated copies ahead of its release. However, the extent of piracy’s impact on the box office has not been independently verified.
Trade analysts also attributed the lower-than-expected collections to mixed audience reactions and divided critical reviews, though official data linking these factors to the box office performance is unavailable.
Despite the slower-than-expected global opening, the film performed strongly in Tamil Nadu, where the Tamil version accounted for the bulk of the domestic earnings. Distributors remain optimistic that positive word-of-mouth and the weekend holiday period could help improve the film’s collections in the coming days.
