Panama City: A powerful earthquake struck Panama in Central America on Friday, sending tremors across several areas, including the capital, Panama City, where residents reported buildings shaking.
According to a revised report by the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Panama, the epicentre was located 39 km northwest of Tonosí in Los Santos province. The institute reported the magnitude as 7.2, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded it at 7.7.
Details of the damage and the impact on the population were not immediately available. Authorities and relevant agencies were expected to assess the situation and provide further updates.
The earthquake also raised concerns about the possibility of a tsunami. Questions were raised about potential impacts on coastal areas, including Easter Island, as experts monitored the situation.

Following the tremors, Panama President José Raúl Mulino took to social media platform X and urged people to remain calm.
Authorities were awaiting further assessments to establish the extent of the damage and clarify the earthquake’s magnitude and any potential tsunami threat.
