New Delhi: AICC general secretary K C Venugopal on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the BJP after an FIR was registered against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Uttarakhand, alleging that the action came a day after Gandhi demanded prosecution of BJP workers over the “purification” conducted following Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s rally.
In a post on X, Venugopal said the timing of the FIR was a case of “the pot calling the kettle black”. He alleged that the BJP was defending what he described as “abhorrently casteist behaviour” and accused the party of being among the biggest perpetrators of social injustice.
“The BJP is willing to put the entire might of the state to attack those who speak against Dalit atrocities,” Venugopal alleged.
He said the BJP’s actions amounted to an attack on the values of social justice enshrined in the Constitution. “The Congress will fight against this attack tooth and nail,” he said.
Venugopal maintained that the Congress would not relent until those responsible for the alleged insult to Kharge were punished and what he called the “frivolous FIR” against Rahul Gandhi was withdrawn.
He also announced protests by Congress workers across the country, saying party workers would take to the streets in the evening to demand prosecution of BJP leaders allegedly responsible for insulting Kharge and to defend the Constitution and its commitment to social justice.
The FIR against Gandhi was registered following allegations that his remarks on the “purification” carried out after Kharge’s rally had hurt the sentiments of members of the Scheduled Caste community.
