Rain likely across Karnataka till June 9; IMD warns of thunderstorms, strong winds

Bengaluru: Several parts of Karnataka are likely to witness rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next few days, with the weather activity expected to continue till June 9, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The department has forecast thunderstorms and rain at isolated places across coastal, north interior and south interior Karnataka. Wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are also likely in some areas, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious.

According to the forecast, less than 50% of the regions in north interior, south interior and coastal Karnataka are expected to receive rainfall. However, heavy showers are likely in a few districts, and local administrations have been asked to take necessary precautionary measures.

Districts that may receive heavy rainfall include Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Haveri, Belagavi, Mysuru, Mandya and Raichur, the IMD said.

The weather department has also warned of lightning activity in several locations and urged people to avoid taking shelter under trees or venturing into open fields during thunderstorms.

With the southwest monsoon gathering momentum over the region, farmers, fishermen and the general public have been advised to closely follow weather updates and adhere to safety advisories issued by authorities.

Officials said rainfall activity is expected to intensify further in parts of the state as monsoon conditions strengthen over the coming days.
