NEW DELHI: Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has made her debut on social media platform X, sharing intimate memories of her love story with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ahead of the release of her memoir, Belonging, scheduled for November 10.
In her first post, Sonia shared a video in which she looks through old black-and-white photographs and responds to questions about her personal life. She recalled how a chance meeting at a small Greek restaurant in Cambridge, England, marked the beginning of her relationship with Rajiv.

A chance meeting that changed her life
Recalling her early days in England, Sonia said finding suitable food was difficult at the time, with fewer restaurants than there are today. While searching for a place to eat, she discovered a Greek restaurant in Cambridge that was frequented by European and Indian students.
It was there that a mutual friend introduced her to Rajiv Gandhi.
Sonia recalled feeling immediately drawn to him when she first saw him. She later learnt that Rajiv had developed similar feelings for her.
Describing what attracted her to Rajiv, Sonia said he was extremely handsome, but it was his gentleness that touched her most deeply. She added that she could never forget the moment they first met.
The introduction soon developed into a close friendship. The two spent time together at parties, student gatherings and Valentine’s Day celebrations, building a relationship that eventually became a defining part of their lives.
Memoir to offer a personal account
Announcing the forthcoming book, Sonia said her love journey began at the small Greek restaurant in Cambridge, where she and Rajiv went on to create a world filled with love, laughter and memories.
She said Belonging would allow her to share that world with readers when the memoir is released on November 10.
Congress leaders, including party media department head Pawan Khera, responded emotionally to her post, describing the couple’s story as one marked by love, sacrifice and commitment, tragically cut short by Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991.
In a small Greek restaurant in Cambridge my journey of love began.
Rajiv and I created a world filled with love, laughter and memories. On 10th November, I share that world with you. https://t.co/zvN5Rqqstf
