New Delhi: The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) has crossed a major milestone with more than 1.25 crore houses sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, of which over 1 crore houses have been completed and delivered to beneficiaries across the country.
The Centre is now accelerating PMAY-U 2.0 to expand affordable housing access for eligible urban families. At the eighth meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), held in New Delhi on August 6, another 2.09 lakh houses were sanctioned for economically weaker section (EWS) families across 16 states and Union Territories.
Of the latest approvals, around 1.42 lakh houses fall under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) component, which provides financial assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh to beneficiaries building pucca houses on their own land. Another 67,045 houses were sanctioned under the Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) component.
With the latest approvals, total sanctions under PMAY-U 2.0 have crossed 18.38 lakh houses, including 14.40 lakh BLC houses and 2.48 lakh AHP houses.
The scheme has also placed a strong focus on women’s ownership. Of the 2.09 lakh houses approved at the latest CSMC meeting, 2.03 lakh have been allotted to women. Overall, around 1 crore of the 1.25 crore houses sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 are in the name of women or jointly owned by women.
The government said PMAY-U 2.0 is also prioritising vulnerable groups, including SC, ST and OBC communities, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and other disadvantaged sections, with the broader goal of ensuring affordable and dignified housing for eligible urban families.
