New Delhi: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has described the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as one of the most transformative reforms introduced during the last 12 years of the Modi government, saying it has freed students from being confined to rigid academic streams.
Speaking at the The Week Education Conclave 2026, the minister said the new policy allows students to pursue subjects based on their interests and abilities rather than predetermined choices. He noted that earlier, many students were compelled to continue in streams selected by parents, limiting their opportunities and career aspirations.
According to him, NEP 2020 has introduced flexibility that enables learners to switch disciplines and explore diverse fields such as biotechnology, literature and emerging technologies. This has helped students enter professions by choice, improving motivation and the quality of the future workforce.
Dr. Singh said the impact of these reforms is also visible in the scientific community, where an increasing number of young researchers are pursuing science out of genuine interest, leading to greater innovation and commitment.
Highlighting the role of technology in education, he said digital platforms have democratized learning opportunities beyond metropolitan cities. Students from smaller towns are now securing top ranks in competitive examinations without relying heavily on expensive coaching institutions.
He observed that educational success today is increasingly driven by self-learning, determination and effective use of available resources. The minister cited examples of students from modest backgrounds excelling in national-level examinations through perseverance and disciplined effort.
Describing the present period as a promising phase in India’s educational journey, Dr. Singh said the country’s youth have unprecedented access to opportunities and resources. He expressed confidence that the younger generation would play a key role in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and contribute significantly to nation-building through innovation, excellence and public service.
The minister also appreciated the role of teachers and educators in mentoring future generations and guiding students towards meaningful careers.
