Israel, Lebanon agree to ceasefire after US-mediated talks in Washington

Washington: Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a ceasefire following two days of high-level negotiations in Washington, in a diplomatic breakthrough facilitated by the United States.

The agreement was reached after a trilateral meeting involving representatives from the US, Israel and Lebanon, aimed at easing tensions along the border and preventing further escalation in the region.

According to details of the understanding, priority will be given to ensuring a complete halt to Hezbollah attacks and the withdrawal of Hezbollah operatives from areas south of the Litani River.

The two sides have also agreed to establish designated pilot zones that will remain under the full control of the Lebanese Armed Forces, a move aimed at strengthening security and stability in the border region.

US officials described the agreement as an important step towards creating conditions for a broader peace and security framework between the neighbouring countries.

Both Israel and Lebanon reiterated that they do not seek hostilities against each other and expressed their commitment to addressing outstanding issues through dialogue and negotiations.

The ceasefire agreement comes amid sustained international efforts to prevent the conflict from widening and to restore stability in the region.
