Bengaluru: The Congress on Wednesday announced its candidates for the upcoming elections to seven seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council, with the party giving significant representation to leaders from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community.
The list released by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) includes B K Hariprasad, P V Mohan, Shivanna Malavalli and Thippanappa Kamakanur among the nominees.
While Hariprasad and Kamakanur have been renominated for another term, Mohan and Malavalli have been fielded for the first time.
Political observers noted that the party has placed considerable emphasis on social representation in its candidate selection process. Four of the candidates chosen for the seats are from OBC communities, reflecting the Congress leadership’s focus on broadening social inclusion within the organisation.
The move is also being seen as one of the first major political decisions under the leadership of Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who recently assumed office.
Congress leaders said the selection was aimed at balancing organisational considerations with social representation, while also rewarding long-time party workers and leaders.
The candidate list has sparked discussion in political circles, with many viewing it as a clear message from the Congress on its commitment to social justice and inclusive representation ahead of future political contests in the state.
The Legislative Council elections are scheduled to be held later this month.
