New Delhi: The government’s flagship initiative Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) has evolved from a targeted policy intervention into a nationwide movement promoting the dignity, protection and empowerment of the girl child, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said.
Launched on January 22, 2015, the scheme was introduced to address the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and tackle gender-based discrimination. The initiative is jointly implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Education.
The programme focuses on ensuring safe birth, early childhood care, education and overall development of girls through coordination between government agencies, communities, media and civil society.
According to Health Management Information System (HMIS) data, the national Sex Ratio at Birth has improved from 918 in 2014-15 to 929 in 2024-25, reflecting efforts to prevent gender-biased sex selection and encourage institutional deliveries.
The initiative has also contributed to improving girls’ access to education. As per Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) data, girls’ enrolment at the secondary level increased from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 80.2% in 2024-25.
Officials said BBBP follows a lifecycle approach, beginning with ensuring a safe and dignified birth and extending to education, skill development and empowerment.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to strengthening the scheme and creating an environment where every girl child is protected, educated and empowered, supporting the vision of women-led development.
