New Delhi: The Centre has reappointed Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General of India for a fresh three-year term beginning July 1, 2026, reaffirming its confidence in one of the country’s most prominent law officers.
The reappointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), according to an official order. Mehta will continue as the nation’s second-highest law officer and remain in office until further orders.
Mehta was first appointed Solicitor General in 2018 and subsequently received extensions in 2020 and 2023. With the latest reappointment, he is set to serve in the position for nearly 11 years, making him one of the longest-serving Solicitors General in India’s legal history.
The government has also reappointed five Additional Solicitors General for a three-year term. They include Vikramjit Banerjee, K. M. Nataraj, S. V. Raju, N. Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati.
In a separate notification, the Centre approved the reappointment of Chetan Sharma as Additional Solicitor General for the Delhi High Court for a further period of six months.
Over the years, Mehta has represented the Union government in several high-profile constitutional, legislative and policy-related matters before the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts across the country.
