Chamarajanagar: The Karnataka police department has handed over the investigation into the Chamarajanagar forest firing incident, in which three people were killed, to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
State Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police (DG-IGP) Salim issued an official order transferring the probe.
Four separate FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident — one at Ramapura police station, two at Hanur police station and one at Kollegal Rural police station.
The decision to transfer the cases to the CID was taken to ensure a comprehensive investigation into all four FIRs. The Chamarajanagar district police have been directed to immediately hand over the complete case files, documents and evidence to the CID officers.
The firing incident had triggered questions and concern among local residents and the public, particularly over the circumstances that led forest department personnel to open fire.
The CID is expected to examine the exact sequence of events, circumstances surrounding the firing and the reason for the use of firearms.
A senior CID team is likely to visit the incident site and conduct a fresh assessment of the evidence. Investigators will also examine statements of witnesses and other persons connected to the case.
The CID probe is expected to establish the circumstances leading to the deaths and provide clarity on the events surrounding the shootout.
