Centre Committed to Building Strong EV Charging Network: Kumaraswamy

Bengaluru: Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy said the Central Government is committed to building a modern and reliable electric vehicle charging ecosystem to support India’s clean mobility transition.

Speaking at the National Conference on “Enabling Nationwide EV Charging Infrastructure under PM E-DRIVE Scheme” held in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy said the PM E-DRIVE scheme reflects the government’s resolve to make electric mobility affordable, dependable and accessible across both urban and rural India.

The minister announced approval for Karnataka’s proposal to install 1,243 EV chargers with an outlay of ₹123.26 crore. So far, proposals worth ₹503.86 crore have been approved for installation of 4,874 EV chargers across several states and central public sector undertakings.

The approved proposals include companies such as HPCL, IOCL and BPCL, along with states including Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Hanif Qureshi, said the PM E-DRIVE initiative is laying the foundation for a future-ready EV charging network across the country. He noted that the ministry will support charging infrastructure for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, buses and trucks.

Under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, the Centre has approved a total outlay of ₹10,900 crore for promoting electric mobility and strengthening the EV ecosystem. Of this, ₹2,000 crore has been earmarked for development of EV public charging infrastructure across India.
