Rahul Gandhi accuses BJP, RSS of having ‘anti-Adivasi mindset’

New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused the BJP and the RSS of attempting to undermine the rights and identity of tribal communities, alleging that they were promoting a narrative that diminishes the historical significance of Adivasis.

Addressing the ‘Adivasi Professionals Conference 2026’ at Indira Bhavan in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi described Adivasis as the original inhabitants of India and the rightful inheritors of the country’s cultural and historical legacy.

Paying tribute to tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda at the start of his speech, Rahul alleged that constitutional rights related to water, forests and land were under threat and called for stronger efforts to safeguard tribal interests.

The Congress leader also criticised the use of the term “Vanavasi” by the BJP and the RSS, arguing that it fails to reflect the true identity and history of tribal communities.

“Adivasis are the original inhabitants of this land. The term ‘Vanavasi’ merely refers to people living in forests and overlooks their rich history, culture and identity,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi stressed that genuine national progress is possible only when a society acknowledges and respects its roots and cultural heritage.

Expressing concern over what he termed the neglect of tribal history, he said that while tribal youth are increasingly gaining access to education and employment opportunities, their centuries-old heritage and contributions continue to be overlooked.

Reiterating the Congress party’s commitment to tribal welfare, Rahul said the party would continue to fight for the protection of tribal rights, land ownership and cultural identity.
