Bengaluru: AICC General Secretary and Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala has described the Congress victory in the Legislative Council elections as a “compass” pointing towards the 2028 Assembly elections.
Reacting to the election results, Surjewala said the outcome reflected public support for the Congress government’s welfare agenda and guarantee schemes in Karnataka.
“The Legislative Council election results are historic. This is a victory for public welfare and social justice. It is a vote in favour of the guarantee schemes and the people,” he said.
Highlighting the numbers, Surjewala pointed out that while the Congress has 135 MLAs in the Assembly, its candidates received 151 first-preference votes, which he claimed indicated support for the government’s policies beyond party lines.
He said Karnataka’s political landscape was now centred around two contrasting approaches — the Congress’ five guarantee schemes on one side and the BJP-JDS alliance on the other.
According to Surjewala, the guarantee schemes have delivered financial assistance to people across the state and voters have responded positively to welfare and development initiatives.
He added that the Council election victory signals continued public backing for the Congress government’s programmes and could influence the party’s prospects in the 2028 Assembly elections.
