NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11 and 12, the High Commission of India in Ottawa announced on Friday, following a telephone conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The visit comes as both countries seek to strengthen bilateral relations after a period of diplomatic tensions. The two leaders have agreed to build on the recent positive momentum in ties and pursue concrete outcomes across key areas of cooperation.
Trade is expected to be a major focus of the visit, with India and Canada reaffirming their commitment to concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at the earliest opportunity. The proposed pact is aimed at deepening economic engagement and supporting efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030.

Cooperation in energy, technology, security, defence and people-to-people exchanges is also expected to feature prominently in discussions. Both governments have been working to expand engagement across these sectors as part of efforts to rebuild trust and broaden their strategic partnership.
The two leaders discussed the impact of geopolitical instability on the Indo-Pacific region and stressed the importance of reliable partners in areas such as energy and agriculture, according to the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office.
Modi is also expected to engage with members of the Indian diaspora during the two-day visit. His proposed engagements in Ottawa and Toronto are expected to provide an opportunity to connect with the Indian community in Canada.
The announcement follows renewed diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Ottawa, including high-level discussions on trade, investment, energy and security. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand also visited New Delhi this week to discuss ways to advance shared priorities.
The outcome of Modi’s visit is expected to be closely watched, particularly for progress on the proposed trade agreement and efforts to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
