Chennai: Veteran filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja, who revolutionised Tamil cinema with his realistic portrayal of rural life, passed away at the age of 86 in Chennai on Wednesday after battling age-related ailments.
Bharathiraja, who made his directorial debut with the landmark film 16 Vayathinile in 1977, transformed Tamil filmmaking by bringing village life and authentic characters to the big screen. Over a career spanning several decades, he directed acclaimed films such as Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Kaadhal Oviyam and Muthal Mariyathai.
Expressing grief over his demise, superstar Rajinikanth described Bharathiraja as a close friend of five decades and one of the most influential figures in Tamil cinema.
“Bharathiraja introduced numerous actors, actresses and technicians to the film industry and gave new life to Tamil cinema. His creations will never be forgotten. His name will remain in the hearts of Tamil people forever,” Rajinikanth said.
The actor also remembered Bharathiraja’s simplicity and candid nature, saying the filmmaker always spoke his mind and left behind cherished memories for those who worked with him.
