New Delhi: Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday ended his 26-day indefinite fast after the Centre assured action to curb examination-related irregularities, including question paper leaks.
The development came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a video message, announced that the government would introduce a stringent law to deal with question paper leaks and other examination malpractices. The proposed legislation, he said, would provide for strict punishment for offenders and the establishment of fast-track courts to ensure speedy disposal of such cases.
The Prime Minister also expressed hope that Wangchuk would end his fast following the government’s announcement and wished him a speedy recovery.
Wangchuk ended his fast at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram in the presence of Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
In a post on X, Wangchuk said he had taken the decision after holding extensive discussions with the Central government. He added that he did not want any situation that could lead to violence in the country and said that 65 Members of Parliament from different political parties had appealed to him to end the fast.
Calling for peaceful dialogue, Wangchuk urged people to resolve national issues through democratic and non-violent means, saying differences should be addressed without allowing violence to take root.
