Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted Yoga’s growing global influence, describing it as a powerful tool for health, wellness and active living, while urging people across the world to participate in the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 celebrations.
Addressing the inaugural session of the First World Yogasana Championship 2026 in Ahmedabad, Modi said Yoga has evolved into a global movement that is helping millions improve their physical and mental well-being.
With the 12th International Day of Yoga set to be observed on June 21 under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, the Prime Minister said Yoga offers an effective and accessible path to healthier and more active living.
Recalling India’s initiative at the United Nations that led to the declaration of International Day of Yoga, Modi noted that the proposal received unprecedented support from countries across the world.
“Yoga, meditation and pranayama have become an integral part of daily life for millions globally,” he said, emphasizing their role in promoting preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyles.
Referring to this year’s theme, Modi said people everywhere are seeking sustainable ways to remain healthy, active and productive throughout their lives. Yoga, he added, provides a practical solution for achieving holistic well-being across all age groups.
Describing the First World Yogasana Championship as a “double dose of health and wellness” ahead of IDY 2026, Modi said the event would help raise awareness about Yoga and encourage greater public participation.
Highlighting the Ministry of AYUSH’s Yoga 365 initiative, he urged participants from different countries to become ambassadors of Yoga and spread awareness about its benefits in their communities.
Reiterating that Yoga requires minimal resources while offering lifelong benefits, the Prime Minister called on people to make it a part of their daily routine, saying regular practice can help prevent diseases and build healthier societies.
The Ministry of AYUSH said this year’s celebrations aim to promote Yoga as a lifelong companion for healthy and active ageing while expanding its reach across India and the world.
