301 gallantry medals among 1,057 awards for police, fire and security personnel

New Delhi: A total of 1,057 personnel from the police, fire services, Home Guard and Civil Defence and correctional services have been awarded gallantry and service medals on the occasion of Independence Day 2026.

Of the total awards, 301 are Medals for Gallantry (GM), including 272 for police personnel and 29 for fire service personnel. The awards recognise acts of exceptional courage in saving lives and property, preventing crimes and apprehending criminals.

Among the gallantry awardees, 197 personnel are from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, 51 from Jammu and Kashmir, 12 from the Northeast and 41 from other regions.

A total of 92 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM) have also been awarded. These include 83 police personnel, four fire service personnel, three Civil Defence and Home Guard personnel and two correctional service personnel.

Another 664 personnel have received Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) for valuable service marked by dedication and devotion to duty. The recipients include 606 from the police service, 28 from the fire service, 18 from Civil Defence and Home Guard services and 12 from correctional services.

The medals recognise the courage, commitment and distinguished service of personnel across various security and public safety services.
