Bengaluru: Senior BJP leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to conserve resources, calling it a precautionary step in the backdrop of global instability.
Speaking to reporters in Gadag, Bommai said the Prime Minister had cautioned citizens about possible disruptions in global oil and energy supplies due to the ongoing conflicts involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
Referring to the Russia-Ukraine war, Bommai said the conflict had earlier led to shortages of fertilizers and raw materials, while the current geopolitical tensions are creating challenges in the supply of petrol, diesel and cooking gas.
“Despite the global situation, India has not faced any major energy shortage because of Prime Minister Modi’s diplomatic approach,” Bommai said.
He defended Modi’s appeal to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, limit foreign travel and avoid excessive gold purchases, saying these measures are in the country’s economic interest.
“Even if people avoid buying gold for a year, nothing serious will happen. Heavy gold imports put pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves,” he said.
Bommai also highlighted the Prime Minister’s call to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and encourage organic farming practices.
Targeting the Congress, Bommai alleged that the opposition party criticises every issue only for political reasons. “Congress does not understand the meaning of sacrifice and patriotism,” he said.
