Bengaluru: In a move aimed at decentralising specialised heart care, the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Greater Bengaluru Authority to set up a 100-bed satellite cardiac unit in Govindarajnagara.
The agreement was formalised at Vikasa Soudha between Jayadeva director Dr B. Dinesh and GBA chief commissioner N. Maheshwara Rao in the presence of medical education minister Dr. Sharanprakash R Patil, Govindarajnagar MLA Priya Krishna and other senior officials.
The new facility, to be housed within GBA’s existing multispecialty building, is expected to cater to residents of west Bengaluru areas such as Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar, Yeshwanthpur, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Dasarahalli and Peenya, besides patients from neighbouring districts. Officials said treatment will be provided at minimal or no cost.
“This is a major step in taking cardiac care closer to people,” Patil said, adding that the unit would reduce the burden on the main Jayadeva hospital in Jayanagar, which already handles a large patient load and operates satellite centres in other parts of the state.
The state government has allocated ₹15 crore for the project. Priya Krishna said additional infrastructure work, including civil and electrical modifications, will be supported through local civic funds, while a cathlab facility is planned under CSR initiatives.
Looking ahead, Dr Dinesh said the institute plans to expand its network with similar units in north, central and east Bengaluru. A site for the north Bengaluru facility has already been identified in consultation with revenue minister Krishna Byregowda.
In a parallel development, the government has also initiated steps to set up a new campus of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute in west Bengaluru. Officials have been directed to identify at least five acres of government land for the project, aimed at expanding access to quality medical education and healthcare services beyond the city’s southern corridor.
