Centre launches PM Research Chair Scheme to attract global Indian talent

New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has launched applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026, a flagship initiative aimed at bringing accomplished Indian-origin researchers, scientists and technology professionals from across the world to India’s leading academic and research institutions.

Announcing the scheme, the Department of Higher Education said the initiative seeks to strengthen India’s research and innovation ecosystem by connecting global Indian talent with institutions working in strategic and emerging sectors.

The programme will focus on 13 priority areas, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity, healthcare, biotechnology, advanced materials, space, defence, telecommunications, manufacturing, agriculture and atomic energy.

Under the scheme, selected PMRC Fellows will receive research grants, fellowship support and access to advanced laboratories and research infrastructure. The initiative is open to Indian nationals working abroad, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders and Persons of Indian Origin with significant achievements in research, innovation and technology.

The scheme offers three categories of engagement—Young Research Fellows, Senior Research Fellows and Research Chairs—catering to researchers at different stages of their careers.

Seven premier institutions, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Hyderabad and Dhanbad, along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, have been designated as lead institutions for implementation.

Officials said the initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen research capacity and accelerate India’s journey towards becoming a knowledge-driven and innovation-led economy.

Applications from eligible fellows and host institutions opened on June 1 through the PMRC portal.
