Monsoon to reach Kerala on June 4; Karnataka may see onset by June 7-8

New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is expected to make its onset over Kerala on June 4, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, signalling the start of the country’s annual rainy season.

The weather department has issued alerts for several districts in Kerala, warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds in the coming days. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and follow weather advisories.

Meteorologists said the monsoon is likely to advance further north after entering Kerala and could reach Karnataka’s coastal and Malnad regions by June 7 or 8.

Districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, along with parts of the Malnad belt, are expected to witness increased rainfall activity as the monsoon progresses.

The arrival of the monsoon is expected to bring relief from the prevailing heat and aid agricultural activities across the region.

Meanwhile, weather experts have cautioned that the influence of El Niño conditions could result in slightly below-normal rainfall in some parts of the country during the season. Despite this, several states in south India are expected to receive good rainfall during the initial phase of the monsoon.

The IMD said it will continue to monitor the monsoon’s progress and issue regular forecasts and warnings.
