Tehran: Amid ongoing tensions with the US and Israel, Iran has announced the schedule for the state funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to reports, the funeral ceremonies will begin on July 4, 2026, with the final burial scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Reza Shrine in northeastern Iran.
Khamenei was reportedly killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, 2026. However, the funeral was delayed for several months due to security concerns amid heightened regional tensions.
The funeral is expected to be attended by Iran’s top political and military leadership, including officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), prompting concerns over possible security threats.
As per the announced schedule, farewell ceremonies will be held at the Khamenei Mausoleum in Tehran on July 4 and 5. A funeral procession will take place in Tehran on July 6, followed by a ceremony in the holy city of Qom on July 7.
The final procession will be held in Mashhad on July 9, after which the body will be laid to rest at the Imam Reza Shrine.
The announcement comes at a crucial time as diplomatic efforts and peace talks continue in the Middle East.
