Washington: In a significant political setback for President Donald Trump, the US House of Representatives has passed a bipartisan war powers resolution calling for an end to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
The resolution was approved by a narrow 215-208 vote, reflecting growing concern among lawmakers over the four-month-old military engagement.
Introduced by Democratic leader Gregory Meeks, the measure received support from members across party lines. Meeks described the vote as a “bipartisan rebuke” of what he termed an unnecessary and costly conflict.
Several lawmakers argued that the military campaign has failed to achieve its stated objectives, including curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. House Armed Services Committee member Adam Smith said the conflict had not succeeded in deterring Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Critics of the war also pointed to its economic consequences, including rising fuel prices and growing instability in the Middle East. Meeks claimed American consumers have faced higher gasoline costs since the conflict began.
Supporters of the resolution argued that Congress must reassert its constitutional authority over decisions related to military action and war powers.
